Science is risky. It’s risky because it’s unpredictable, and we don’t always know what we’ll discover next. It’s risky because we have no idea what’s going to happen when we attempt something new. Moreover, It’s risky because we don’t know what’s going to happen when we try something new.

Scientists have long debated what role the El Niño-Southern Oscillation plays in the global climate system. And a new study shows that El Niño events have a bigger impact on the global climate system. Rather than previously thought. This was the first study to examine the influence of El Niño on global climate at the scale of monthly averages.

The first step in understanding this risk is to realize that Newton’s science was a risky enterprise back then too. He was ridicule, ridicule, and ridicule for his “fanciful” alchemy experiments. But he was right to be ridicule. Alchemy experiments were ridiculously dangerous.

I started to wonder about that. What do we actually know about Newton’s alchemy?

Newton was a polymath. He made major contributions to optics, calculus, mechanics, and astronomy.

Newton’s first law is one of the most famous in physics. “Every object in the universe is in constant motion. And the only way to avoid run over by a car is to avoid a car”. This law, first enunciated by Newton in 1687, states that an object at rest will stay at rest. And an object in motion will stay in motion with constant speed unless acted upon by an external force.

The Encyclopedia, Keefe’s masterpiece, was an epic project that took him more than a decade to complete. He began the work in 1826 when he was 23 years old. He took his name from James O’Keefe, who was the editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica at the time.  Keefe was a friend and colleague of his father, who had a distinguished career at the university.
