The role of a chief operating officer (COO) is to aid and assist the CEO and the general needs of the company. Many of these roles do not have a true job description and rather are tailored to the specific needs of the CEO at that time. There are several different types of COOs, all providing different levels of aid and involvement with the inner workings of the company. All COOs tend to be adaptable to shifting needs, organized and strive to have a desire and passion to streamline the company’s operations for efficiency.
Despite these benefits, a true COO is a rare find, with 75% of CEOs currently operating without one. One of the reasons for this is because of a lack of training for people in these roles. Many companies struggle to equip their COOs to succeed with benefits such as COO coaching, leading to inefficiencies. These can be detrimental, costing the company valuable time and revenue. Thankfully there are ways to remedy this problem with coaching and training specific to the work of a COO. It is more important now than ever before to invest in the world’s COOs, pushing the company and its employees further toward success.
