Moving Abroad with a Pet and Household Goods: One Plan

  • Your pet and your household goods travel separately. Your pet usually flies, and your furniture and boxes go by sea or air freight. The trick is to plan both with one timeline, one set of dates and one point of contact.
  • Start the pet’s paperwork first. Health certificates, vaccinations, microchipping and import permits can take weeks or months, and your pet cannot travel until they’re done. Pikkol’s guide says “some relocations may take a few weeks, while others require several months of preparation.”
  • Your household goods follow a different clock. On Pikkol’s USA and Canada routes, sea freight takes about 55–85 days door to door, and air freight 7–14 days.
  • Pikkol handles both through pet relocation and international relocations, so you can plan them together.

Can you move a pet and household goods together?

What How it travels Who handles it
Your pet By air, in an airline-approved crate, with you or separately Pikkol’s pet relocation team

They are two shipments with one plan. Pikkol’s pet service covers dogs, cats, birds and small mammals, and exotic pets go to the support team for a custom plan. Pets can travel separately with Pikkol, or you can travel with them.

What should the plan look like?

3-4 months before Vaccinations, microchip and permits as your destination requires Book your survey and your mover

2-4 weeks before Final vet check, and crate ready Packing and export paperwork

Who travels when?

Option How it works Good for
Pet flies with you Your pet travels on your flight, or on one close to it Anxious pets, and short trips
Pet flies separately Pikkol books the pet’s flight, and you meet it at arrival When your pet’s paperwork or airline space doesn’t match your date
Goods ship first, you and the pet follow Your container sails early When your home abroad is ready first
You and the pet fly first, goods follow You land with essentials, the container follows Most common, but you’ll need basics while you wait

Pets can’t always travel on the same flight as you. Airline rules, the pet’s size and breed, and the weather can decide. Ask your coordinator to confirm your options.

What should you ship ahead, and what stays with you?

Pet vaccination and health records Keep originals with you, and copies in your hand luggage
Pet medicines Carry with you, with a vet’s prescription
Cages, scratching posts, large furniture Ship with household goods, or buy new
Essentials for the first 2 weeks Send by air freight, or the international parcel service

What if your new home isn’t ready?
